A member of the public reported a large great white shark around 50 metres off shore at 8.49am, and Surf Life Saving WA later closed the beach due to a reported "shark interaction" with a swimmer.
Beach-goers have since evacuated the water, and emergency services attended the scene.
A St Johns spokesman said they had treated a patient for shock, but were not required to transport the man to hospital.
