Charter and trailer boats spent the weekend out searching for the elusive tuna, but other than a few albacore and even the odd late marlin, the bluefin and yellowfin remained elusive.

That was until Kevin Facey and his mate Josh from Bermagui spent all day Monday trolling and were able to come back in the dark with an elusive barrel and probably one of the first recreationally caught bluefin tuna in the area. Well done boys!
The kingfish were on again at Montague Island on Saturday and Sunday for those able to get the fish through the hungry seals, and new Narooma veterinarian Kym Sutherland, previously from South Australia, was able to get his first ever kingfish that measured a very nice 90cm and was caught on a live bait.
Narooma Sport and Gamefishing Club president Les Waldock meanwhile was able to get a couple of nice 60cm snapper on Monday off Tuross on floating pilchard baits.
The beaches south of Narooma remain productive for salmon, tailor and the odd gummy shark, with some nice gutters available.
Graham at Tackle World Moruya in his weekly report informs us that anglers are having to work a little harder due to the cold conditions. Flathead are being caught on the sand flats just upstream from Preddys Wharf on the Moruya River using minnow-style soft plastics in a baitfish imitation color.
Plenty of bream are hanging around the oyster racks in the backwaters, again the soft plastics are working well. Fishing a run out tide in the channel near the hole in the wall is also producing good size bream on both striped tuna and mullet fillet.
The Tuross River has estuary perch holding tight into structure such as fallen logs and trees upstream in the Bumbo area. Soft plastic grubs on a lightweight jighead are hard for them to resist.
The Fourways area is fishing well for flathead at the moment with plastics, as well as poddy mullet, blue bait and prawns are also working well. Turlinjah oyster racks are fishing well for bream.
Large salmon and tailor are still hanging around in the front of the system with soft plastics, metal slices and pillies all working very well. Mullimburra point area has been fishing well for drummer and bream this week on cunji and peeled prawns.
Salmon and tailor are hanging around the breakwall and north head beach. Gang hooks and pillies or metal slices are doing the job. Some good bream and whiting are also being caught in the same area using prawns and worms.
Pedro Point and Congo area is seeing a few snapper come aboard on both soft plastics and bait. Some good squid are hanging around in close also. Thanks Graham.
Anglers are reminded that the June long weekend is their last opportunity in designated streams and rivers across NSW, looking to catch a trout before the traditional fishing season closes in these waters over the winter months. So if you didn’t get up to the Eucumbene for the brown spawning run yet, you better hurry!
NSGFC report – I have noticed that there is a lot of black fish in the Wagonga Inlet at the moment, and some of our members have had a lot of success catching them on very light gear and green weed. I believe a lot of patience is the go and a lot of fun. Don’t forget the long weekend, Friday and Saturday, June 10-11, we will be holding a garage sale inside our clubhouse.
Commencing Friday evening at 4pm and re opening 8am Saturday morning, places are available for anyone who wishes to have a table to sell off anything you don’t need. Jill Johnston is organizing the weekend sale with only a limited number of tables available. We need this to have lots of cheap goodies to be successful so that fishing gear you don’t use, that stuff in the garage you don’t need, bring it all and get it sold! Jill on 0407 164 070 knows all the answers to your questions!
Recently it was brought to my attention that the angel ring installed at Mystery Bay was missing and got washed up at Kiama where it was handed in to Fishcare . It was returned to us at the club but unfortunately it was damaged and cannot be reinstalled, however I was informed that a new one is on its way and will be installed ASAP. So If you see an empty post or find a life buoy ring then please call the toll free 1800 079 009 leave all the details and arrangements will be made to ratify the situation one way or another. Just remember these buoys are placed there to save lives, maybe yours some day.
Even though the weather is getting colder the Narooma Sport and Gamefishing Club rooms, situated on the inlet near the restaurants, will still be open for fish stories, drinks and snacks from 4pm till 9pm on Friday. Visitors are most welcome to come along. – Jan
