Kitchen cost crazy
The Bega Valley Shire Council wants to save money – like myself and many other ratepayers. The large cost of the kitchen for the child care centre is crazy.

For $50,000 I would like to place an order. I’m requesting council grass to be cut and an answer in return. Is council unable to do this job, as they to have save money?

Well done women
Thank you to the women of Merimbula for submitting an application to host the RWN Women’s Gathering for 2018.
The Women’s Gathering is a fantastic event for local women and their communities. It brings women from across the state “Gathering Junkies” to your town. Congratulations for having a go.
The Gathering for 2017 will be held at Narrandera on October 27-29. The Merimbula committee will be there to promote Merimbula and their gathering.
They would be so thrilled if women from the Far South Coast turned up to cheer them on. Well done ladies.

Lacking direction
Could someone please inform me what’s happening with National Parks?
I have had a wonderful association with them since I was a teenager, camping and bushwalking all over the state for decades. As a father and now a grandfather I have kept up my love for the bush and shared it with my family and countless others.
These days when I come down to the coast I book my grandchildren in to the national park activities, the best and in my opinion most important part of what the organisation does.
Twice in the past week however, I have called in to the Merimbula office to purchase my annual pass and it has been closed during office hours.
I was disappointed years ago when they stopped selling interesting toys and educational books in their large foyer. Now they appear not to even open shop.
I know they do a lot of good, but even their back-burning operations leave a lot to be desired these days. I’ve heard the disabled boardwalk in Ben Boyd National Park was partially destroyed in recent weeks.
Is there a plan the public could be informed of, a direction where strong management and an educational focus is hopefully on the cards?

Ban plastic bags
Boomerang Bags Bega Valley Sapphire Coast does their best to reduce plastic shopping bags, our contribution to reduce fossil fuel dependency and counteract climate change. We have produced and distributed already more than 1500 bags from recycled or donated fabric, educated shoppers and created a lot of awareness.
Recently I was told by a local farmers market stall holder that clients are bringing their own bags now, or treasure and reuse our lovingly made bags!
Without a plastic bag ban, it took our grassroots campaign one-and-a-half years to change habits in Bega and finally produce the result we wanted to achieve.
A plastic bag ban would achieve that within a few weeks.
Canberra reduced its landfill by one-third since a ban came into effect.
It’s inconceivable that our politicians don't simply introduce a ban and stop subsidising fossil fuels and that big supermarkets are not taking responsibility.
In the Bega Valley Boomerang Bags are already available at Pambula Wholefood Store, Candelo Bulk Wholefoods Bega, Tathra Beach Supermarket, Tathra Post Office and SCPA market. IGA Tathra is still waiting for their turn, so is Merimbula Fresh food & Merimbula Butchers.
“Bought to Support” Boomerang Bags are available at the Marketplace shop in Bega and Coast Country Merimbula.
