Georgia Poyner finally got that big kingfish she has been after and what a fish it was, coming in at 22 kilograms and 1.3 metres. At just 16 years old, Georgia is fast making name for herself in the spearfishing world, already securing sponsorship for her next spearfishing competition down at Eden in a few weeks time.

But it was in her own time, out of competition that she speared her massive kingfish on Sunday. She would only say it was somewhere out of Narooma and that she is “sworn to secrecy” about the exact location.
“On Sunday and I spent four hours in the water seeing quite a few smaller, rat kingfish. Then we moved a short distance and I hopped in and suddenly had big kingfish all around me, so I was quite excited.” She said she got off a clean shot and the fish was off swimming around her and playing dirty as they usually do. It was only in 8 metres of water so it pulled me around a bit and I had to work to keep it off the bottom, as it’s the same as fishing and they try and reef you.”
The weekend before she competed in the Narooma spearfishing competition and then was off to Batemans Bay to compete in the Ultimate Triathlon Series, winning her age group. Read her full story here
Another interesting developed perhaps due to a warming ocean was that Narooma charter and commercial fisherman Matt Betts got two juvenile dogtooth tuna at Montague Island on the weekend while trolling deep divers for bonito. No-one has really heard of this before and it should be logged to the Red Map database.
Ron Snape meanwhile let us know he’s been getting some good bream up to 45cm from Corunna Lake but mono is the key. There have also been lots of octopus and blue swimmer crabs in the lake. Former Narooma lure manufacturer Mick Elliot got his wife Marianna and sons Matthew and Anthony onto the salmon at Bar Beach a couple of weeks ago and then the next week they all went fishing up at Lake Eucumbene getting some rainbows in the lake, while Anthony got a nice spawning brown in the river.
In Narooma Oyster Festival related news, the Narooma Sport and Gamefishing Club is pleased to announce its involvement again in this year’s festival this Saturday, May 6, when the club will be open for all. The club is having its casting competition with great prizes to be won, running all day for young and old to come and try their luck. It will also be serving delicious Devonshire teas, cakes and has a fully licensed bar.
Also timed to the festival is a talk by renowned fisherman Andrew Badullovich at the Narooma Library also on Saturday from 10.30am to 11am where he will share a few fishing tips.
Moruya report
The system is fishing well for flathead at the moment with consistent 40 to 55 cm dusky's being caught, mainly on grub tail soft plastics. Ryans creek inlet and also between quarry wharf and preddys wharf have been the most productive areas. Good bream are still hitting the surface, the hole in the wall backwaters is the place to go and the Sugarpen 70f is working well. Good bream are also being caught along the rockwall using cranka crabs and bait such as mullet fillet.
On the Tuross River, there are still some big salmon hanging around in the front of the system and they are great fun on light gear! Surface poppers and metal slices are working extremely well as are pilchards for the bait fishos. There are plenty of bream hanging around the oyster racks in the system with the Daiwa double clutch proving to be a deadly lure of choice. Freshly pumped nippers are also working very well.
Flathead are still scattered around the place with reports of some big girls landed around horse island. Gulp soft plastics or small pilly’s are the way to go.
Just over the road at Coila the prawns are still running and a lot of locals have been catching a good feed to take home.
Rocks and Beaches – Moruya breakwall, South Broulee, Pedro Point - take your pick as they are all still fishing well. Salmon and tailor off the wall on pillies and metals. Some good bream are being caught off the beach on pillies also. South Broulee is producing plenty of squid off the rocks. Some good salmon, bonito and smaller kingfish as well.
Offshore there are great reports offshore this week! Montague Island has seen anglers catching mowies, snapper, flathead and kingfish. Some great marlin have been caught around the Tuross canyons.
Moving further north, dolphinfish are hanging around the fads with live bait working the best at the moment. The tollgates are also fishing well for snapper, mowies and kings. – Graham at Moruya Tackleworld
