The first graders went down to Narooma on Sunday 20-18, while Saturday’s showdown against the Panthers in reserve grade proved to be the match of the draw.
The Panthers held out a gritty 24-16 result after the Bega club staged a tremendous fight-back in the second half against the ladder-leaders.
Played at Colombo Park, the hosts had complete control in the first half, leading 18-0 until the dying seconds of the first period, drawing the jeer “do you blokes train or what?” from the Panthers’ front lines.
However, with 30 seconds left on the clock, Josh Shepherdson wormed his way through the pack to find the try-line and Bega trailed 18-4 at the break.
Early tries in the second half to John Parbery and Dillon Aldridge put Bega back within striking distance as the conversion extras from James Grant put the scores at 16-18.
Play centered around the middle where it was a battle of the big men, with Joe Aldridge making good metres for Bega, while Trent Rollason was the prime runner for the Panthers – featuring with two tries.
As play came to a deadlock in the middle it was Josh Cochrane breaking the silence, claiming his second try and putting the Panthers in front 24-18.
The club then held out the Bega offense for the final few minutes to claim the win in a tough display.
Earlier, the Chicks had won 32-10 over the Pink Panthers after a match fraught with handling errors from both sides.
Some sloppy mistakes – dropped balls, forward passes – proved extremely costly for the Pink Panthers as the Chicks were able to clean up the scraps and claim some simple tries.
Ali Ringland and Elyse Philipzen featured heavily for the Bega outfit, while Candelo-Bemboka’s Caitlin Johnson claimed a double for the hosts.
Bega took an early commanding lead, but play settled in the second half, where Emma Backhouse shone for the hosts, claiming four tackles in a great solo display from marker.
Both ladies teams also played a second round on Sunday against the Narooma She-Devils where the Chicks won 16-4, and the Panthers went down 18-8.
The first grade fixture saw Declan Bower-Scott claiming a double for the Roosters, but Narooma was able to fight back with Anthony Thomas also scoring a pair.
Narooma was less accurate with the boot, kicking just two conversions, but they were able to find the try-line for a fourth four-pointer to take the margin over Bega.
The under 18s favoured the Bega visitors as they ran out a 22-18 win over the Devils at Bill Smyth Memorial Oval.
