The Group 16 competition saw the Bega club head to the Monaro to take on Bombala in three grades, with only the reserves coming away with the goods.
Sunday’s wind and rolling thunderstorms didn’t help the Roosters first grade’s chances as they tried to back up last week’s victory over Merimbula-Pambula.
Ladies league-tag coach Ray Ringland, who made the journey up the mountain with the club, said handling errors and failure to regularly complete sets hurt Bega’s chances, despite the siren in sight with a leading two-point margin.
Ringland said a penalty turnover was capitalised upon by the Blue Heelers to take the final score to 28-24 in favour of the home side.
“The wet and windy conditions certainly didn’t help,” Ringland said.
“Bombala is a good side this year, but Bega should’ve won – we just made a lot of mistakes and didn’t complete sets.”
It wasn’t all gloomy for the Roosters with the reserves running over the top of Bombala to the tune of 18-16.
Scott Ingram made his usual outstanding contribution from fullback, while Ringland said James Grant clinched the game with a winning try.
Meanwhile, his own Bega Chicks had a tough time against the ladies league-tag High Heelers, going down 20-12.
“They played pretty good football all day,” Ringland said of his charges.
“We just didn’t get enough of the ball.
“It was a good day all round, but there’s a need to improve a bit across all grades to make sure we’re completing our sets and reducing handling errors.”
In other games played on the weekend, the Merimbula-Pambula Bulldogs put last week’s tight loss to Bega well behind them when they trounced Batemans Bay 72-6 at the Pambula Sporting Complex.
Eden went down to Cooma 64-8, while Moruya and Narooma played out a 10-all draw at Ack Weyman Oval.
Group 16 takes a week off for the Easter long weekend.
Next up for the Bega Roosters is playing host to Batemans Bay in all four grades (the under 18s had a bye this week) on April 23.
Bombala will host the Merimbula-Pambula Bulldogs under lights on the Saturday night, April 22.
