Noted architect Philip Cox drew the pictures based on SPIIRE’s Landscape Master Plan for the town.
Almost 10 years ago he designed a new streetscape for Bermagui’s main thoroughfare Lamont St, to improve its attractiveness to residents and tourists.
In 2013 he provided this concept, pro bono, to SPIIRE when it was developing the CBD Master Plan.
Mr Cox has made many contributions to Bermagui’s architecture, having designed the Fishermen’s Wharf for the Fishing Coop, the Sound Shell for Four Winds and redesigned the town’s Woolworths with support from Bega Valley Shire Council, all for no payment.
Apart from the new colonnaded facade and outdoor seating area on Lamont St, the major elements of the master plan include:
- A gravel surfaced carpark with 30-50 spaces between the sea and Lamont St;
- Concrete footpaths linking the Lamont St shops with the Fishermen’s Wharf, Dickinson Point and surf club toilets;
- Two colonnaded picnic areas, with four sets of tables and chairs opposite the shops on sea side of Lamont St;
- Two extra crossing points on Lamont St, one with an accessible ramp; and
- Trees on Bunga and Montague Streets and around Dickinson Oval.
Andrew Woodley, council’s director of planning and environment, said in February council resolved to consider an allocation of funding in the 2017/18 budget to include going to expressions of interest for detailed design building on the current master plan and to establish detailed working plans in consultation with the Bermagui community.
“The SPIIRE master plans are a guiding document adopted by council as part of its 20 year plan. As indicated in the resolution, no funding has currently been allocated for work on the Bermagui CBD,” Mr Woodley said.
At 6pm on Thursday, Bermagui Chamber of Commerce will hold a general meeting at the town’s community centre to discuss its view of the master plans.
