“However it did not stop our new look division four team from taking it right up to the Merimbula division one team on Sunday at Bega,” a club spokesman said.
The longer the season has gone the more apparent it has been that all Merimbula sides are struggling away from their carpeted surface.
On Sunday on Bega’s carefully curated grass greens the local team put up a great effort, which saw Howard Blacker, Andrew Warby, Augie Phillipzen and Headley Lucas go down by one shot on the last end.
Ken Snowdon with a completely new and younger team from last year of Pip Pearson, Greg Hayden and Merv Howell went down to the Michael Wilkes rink by just three shots and Tony Hanscombe also with three new and younger players, Mick Haigh, Jason Heffernan and Alan Grundy failed by three shots against James Reynolds’ troops.
Merimbula just knocked over the fresh look side by only seven shots.
In stark contrast, the Bega division six side had a thunderous win over Candelo with two impressive margins and a one shot deficit on the final rink, Bega won overall 92-35.
The division sevens are the only team left in pursuit of a flag and needed a win against Merimbula at home.
Bega got off to a good start, but Merimbula began a fight-back at the halfway mark. However, this was a catalyst for Bega to dig deep and the teams came up trumps, winning 60-52.
During the after game speeches, president Augie Phillipzen congratulated Tony Hanscombe and Reg George on winning the District Senior’s pairs and presented them with a feather for their caps.
He also congratulated Michael Wilkes and Boris Schneider from Merimbula on winning the District pairs . Both events were completed on the Bega greens on Saturday. In club rounds, Michael Haigh defeated five-time club champion Andrew Warby 31-20.
