A two-day festival celebrating flamenco and tango called Latin Spirit will come to the Windsong Pavilion and the Four Winds Sound Shell in Barragga Bay on April 15-16.
Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla is credited with defining a new musical genre, the Tango Nuevo, which blurred the lines between popular Latin American and classical music.
You will have the chance to discover his music, played by an extraordinary line up of musicians including Four Winds’ new artistic director James Crabb in an ensemble called Tango Jam 2.
This exceptional group of musicians will tackle one of the most dramatic and sensual rhythms of Tango Nuevo, the Milonga, revisiting Piazzolla’s Quintets performed 12 years ago by Tango Jam 1.
Tango Jam 2 includes former Brodsky Quartet member and Sydney Symphony violinist Andrew Haveron, celebrated guitarist Aleksandr Tsiboulski, Melbourne pianist, conductor and composer Stefan Cassomenos, multifaceted Phil Stack on double bass and Mr Crabb on classical accordion.
Headlining an exciting April 16 program at the Four Winds’ Sound Shell that starts at noon is a performance by one of Australia’s finest baritones, Jose Carbo.
Also performing on the Sunday are Rasa Duende, a collaboration between internationally acclaimed musicians Bobby Singh on tabla, Adrian McNeil on sarod and Damian Wright on flamenco guitar.
Bandaluzia will follow Rada Duende’s performance; they are an acclaimed modern flamenco music and dance ensemble known for explosive displays of dazzling musicianship and virtuosity.
A fiesta will take place in the evening of April 16 at the Bermagui Community Centre. Preceded by Latin dance workshops in flamenco, tango and other popular rhythms like salsa and bachata, the fiesta will help you unleash your inner Latin dancing the night away.
It will include new flamenco from Andalusia, mestizo inspired sounds from Barcelona, traditional and electronic tango from Buenos Aires and sexy sounds from beyond, embracing all the many Latin ingredients to create a real musical paella.
There will also be two international DJs, Melbourne based Mario Gordon and Sydney’s Dwight “Chocolate” Escobar.
Canberra production company Infinitels is putting together a show that promises to give us a little taste of what Vivid and Enlighten feels like using projections to transport us to Buenos Aires and Andalucía.
Also, there will be paella, empanadas and plenty of sangria.
