Bega Valley Year 12 EVET students had an assessment on the day where they chose a country and had to research it to provide advice on where to go and what to do when visiting it, as well as set up their own country-themed stall.
Tourism students came from Bega High School, Eden Marine High School, Lumen Christi Catholic College and the Sapphire Coast Anglican College for the assessment.
“It’s a great learning tool for the students,” Bega TAFE head teacher of Tourism, Hospitality and Events Deirdre Jory said.
“They get to interact with the local industry and the local industry gets to see what we are doing at TAFE.”
SCAC students Maharla Clark and Courtney Yelds had studied Egypt and Indonesia, respectively.
“I’ve never travelled to Indonesia, so I wanted to know what it had to offer because a lot of people are interested in Bali. I want to travel there one day,” Courtney said.
Maharla picked Egypt because she did not know much about it and said it has far more to offer than ancient history.
“There’s things like diving, sand surfing, hot air balloon tours and markets,” she said.
They both wanted to work in the event management side of tourism one day and were glad they had chosen Tourism at Bega TAFE.
“I thought it would be great to have the course under my belt when I leave school,” Courtney said.
“It’s interesting as it has got so many different areas you can go into.”
While Bega High student Jess Simpson had not yet travelled to Italy, she had done in-depth research of the country for her assessment and knew about everything from its architecture and festivals to its food.
“I really like the culture, the three main values are food, family and love,” she said.
Ms Jory said enrollments were “healthy” this year, with about 40 Tourism EVET students at the campus.
