To combat these statistics, a new healthy food strategy has been launched to bring a health star rating into school canteens.
On Tuesday, an information session on the NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy was held at the Bega Valley Public School, attended by 33 school representatives from the Bega Valley, Eurobodalla and the Monaro.
“It’s changing in the canteen, but also students will be learning about healthy food through PDHPE, Science and Technology in Years K to 6, and Food Technology for Years 7 to 8,” Department of Education policy officer Rob Spence said.
“It’s educating students so they understand why healthy food is important to them.”
The strategy’s compliance date is December 2019.
