However the building still comes at a price as there is a lot of renovation needed.

In fact in the report to council, director community, relations and leisure Anthony Basford said that substantial investment was required in order to renew the building.

“The building condition assessment has raised some serious concerns about the building and the preliminary report suggests significant building issues, including the presumed presence of asbestos fibro cladding which is in poor condition. The building is not considered fit for occupation or use in its current form,” Mr Basford said in his report.

But its condition has not deterred the BCCG.

Addressing the council meeting March 15, BCCG member Cheryl Alcock said the group had a strong committee that was committed carrying out essential repairs and applying for funding to assist with continuing work.

“We have approached different groups and the Lions Club is happy to help with the whole thing. They would support us,” Ms Alcock said.

Councillor Cathy Griff asked about asbestos.

“If you found asbestos and council could not take it on, could you take it on,” Cr Griff asked.

“We have put it to Lions and have been assured they could meet the conditions,” Ms Alcock replied.

”We hope to use the building for a number of community groups. The ongoing pursuit of medical services for the town will continue. We’re doing this for the social and health needs of the community,” she added.

As part of the agreement with council the group will be allowed six months to become an incorporated body. There will also be an appropriate covenant or restriction registered on the title to protect the ongoing use of the building for the community. Council said it will support the BCCG to get appropriate legal advice in view of the state of the building.
