It was a good week for offshore fishing with game anglers reporting multiple hook ups of excellent striped marlin off Merimbula and Eden.
These fish are mostly tagged and released for future research and to maintain a sustainable fishery. Near the FADS sizeable dorado (mahi mahi) in the 20-40kg range are providing great catches and lots of excitement.
Some very large morwong are reported from the Boyds Tower Reef, Horseshoe Reef area past Haycock and Long Point. With the moon full gummy shark are plentiful at the reef edges.
Gummys respond well to fresh slimy mackerel.
Snapper are moving northwards and it looks like a great season is opening up. The largest snapper landed during the Eden Amateur Fishing Club Competition was a huge 5.12kg.
Snapper are currently plentiful at the reef off Lennards, Boyd’s Tower and southwards past Mowarry.
Anchoring and burling is a good way to get into the action.
Schools of kingfish are now fairly common in the Mowarry area, while salmon were spotted schooling near North Head and about Short Point and also the Tathra and Merimbula wharves.
Good sand flathead remain plentiful in the area off Tura Headland, Bournda, White Rock, Cowdroys and Bithry Inlet.
At the wharves, the run of calamari squid continues with early morning the best time.
In Merimbula luderick are running well though, but catches are patchy, while there have been some good salmon catches.
Large tailor remain on the bite in both Merimbula and Pambula Lakes. Good whiting are on the prowl and give a wonderful fight when taken from the shallows.
Bream remain active around the oyster racks.
A good number of dusky flathead were landed in the Eden competition showing they are on the bite and this portends well for the club’s strictly catch and release tournament the “Dusky Dash for Cash” tournament scheduled for the weekend of 25-26 March.
Fishing starts at 6am on the Saturday. With a tremendous $500 cash first prize, all results are based on length photographed on a conventional “brag mat”. Entry forms are available from McKays Oysters, Tackle World Merimbula and the Club in Spencer Park.
The club’s annual seafood dinner scheduled for April 1. This is a seven-course seafood spectacular not to be missed. Visitors are welcome. Bookings and pre-payment may be made at the Club.
