Genuine helpful motorists
On Friday, February 17, my wife and l were on the coast highway between Merimbula and Tathra and on a steep incline near the Bournda National Park around 2.15pm, when we had a massive engine failure, loss of all power and were very lucky to get the vehicle and caravan off the roadway to avoid a danger to ourselves and other road users.

The purpose of this email while waiting for the NRMA attendance/support, is to acknowledge the large number of motorists travelling in either direction who offered us assistance.
This varied from storing our caravan over the crest of the hill on his property until our vehicle issue was sorted; tow our caravan to Tathra, our intended location; or stay with us for support and protection.
There are too many other offers to mention, but were all very genuine – to even a P plater who leaned out his window asking if we needed a taxi. Young Aussie humor...
This incident has restored our faith and warmed our hearts that the Aussie spirit and overwhelming offers of support, is very much alive and well, by your locals and interstate travellers alike.
People are very quick to complain, criticise and knock fellow humans when they feel they are poorly treated, but l hope you would afford us the privilege of publishing this notice as a way of thanking all the lovely road users (who know who they are!) of how sincerely their offers of assistance were greatly appreciated.
Victorian caravaners Wendy and Brian.
Waste of money
Andrew Ogilvie (BDN Letters, 21/2) should travel just north of Bega to Coopers Gully to view yet another addition to his “unbelievable” file.
A relatively small bridge is to be repainted. But someone, stupidly, has designed and produced an enormous, bleedingly-obvious sign announcing this. Which Andrew, you and I are paying many, many hundreds of dollars for. And it's sited so it can't easily be read from the highway. How unnecessary. How wasteful! Just paint the bridge. At minimal cost. With minimal disruption to those using the highway.
We're not at all interested in who is doing so, who has commissioned the project, who is supervising it, what paint has been used.
And, please, no more signs like this anywhere else in the area. Ever.
Peter Lacey, Quaama
Sincere thanks
I wish to convey my sincere thanks to the staff of the emergency department at the new South East Regional Hospital for both their professional and kind nature dealing with what could have been a very nasty experience.
Owing to a bee sting and having had bad reactions in previous incidents, the staff attended to my needs without hesitation. I must say that even though the experience passed without any bad complications, I was quite comfortable within my surroundings.
Yes, I received a strongly worded lecture about not carrying EpiPens and will do from now on. I was left with a severe headache but now I know that if any emergencies arise, we have the facilities to be attended to.
It is a bad thing that there appears to be a knife edge funding problem that is setting a negative precedence to the hospital.
Please, get behind this issue in some way. We have a hospital that would be the envy of any country town, but to have a lack of staff is very detrimental to both the staff and anyone in a critical situation.
Doug Spindler, Tathra
The summer that was
This summer saw several record temperatures across the six weeks from January 1 through to February 15.
South Australia saw power outages for several days largely as a result of domestic air conditioning on top of the usual industrial and commercial loads.
Ceiling sweep fans are a much cheaper alternative to air conditioning particularly for distant bedrooms that air conditioning doesn’t always reach. On that note Sydney retailers ran out of ceiling fans at the height of the summer temperatures this February.
It’s also worth considering installing ceiling fans outside of the summer peak when they and electrical contractors are readily available. The conditions are also more suitable if the installer has to enter the ceiling space. If a fan/light unit is operated by a remote control no additional wiring is required in modern or rewired houses.
