Mr Butler received the the Excellence in Indigenous Programs award, at this year’s NSW Disability Industry Innovation Awards.
His ingenuity and dedication led him to develop a culture group, and through mentorship and a support program specifically designed for young Indigenous men via the The Disability Trust has made a difference to his community.
Using a blend of modern and traditional tools and techniques, Mr Butler assists young men develop their everyday life skills, and provide education about culture, language and health.
Now in its third year, participants of the program have been able to engage at a deeper level with their own Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, building stronger long term relationships and futures.
Minister for Disability Services Ray Williams congratulated Mr Butler at Sydney’s Hilton Hotel on Thursday, February 23
“The quality of these nominations reflects the groundswell of organisations and individuals across the sector, and wider community, actively pursuing the opportunity to transform the way they provide supports to people with disability,” Mr Williams said.
“These awards demonstrate the commitment, focus and flexibility that are vital to innovation and the social reform we are all partaking in as the NDIS continues to roll-out across NSW.”
The awards recognise excellence and innovation of community based, non-government individuals and organisations working in the disability sector.
