That morning the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) forecast tight electricity supply conditions for the state following prolonged high temperatures across the region and predicted increased electricity consumption.

AEMO stated there was a potential for electricity supply shortfalls during Friday’s afternoon peak, from about 3.30pm-5.30pm.

This may trigger the need for localised load shedding to rebalance the power system and protect the region’s electricity network from long-term and/or prolonged damage.

When there is a shortfall in the electricity supply, there can be a need to reduce demand very quickly to an acceptable level, known as load shedding, or risk the electricity network becoming unstable.

Whether load shedding is required depends on a combination of factors during the forecast evening peak demand period, including electricity consumption levels, weather temperatures and supply availability.
