Dave Beecham was driving across Bermagui Bridge around 12.10am on Saturday when he alleges some kind of solid item containing liquid was thrown through his window, smashing his glasses into his face and temporarily blinding him.
He was forced to do an emergency stop and was assisted by the driver of the local club’s courtesy bus and other local residents, who called 000.
“I was struck in the face by a rather solid item smashing my glasses into my face and blinding me,” Mr Beecham said. “The liquid stung my eyes causing me not to be able to see anything.
“From both shock pain and inability to see I had to do an emergency stop skidding to a stop.
“I would like to thank the driver of the local courtesy bus who stopped to help and call police. Also another resident came to see what the commotion was. I’d love to extend a thanks to those who attended.”
Kids were seen in the area prior, but before police arrived from Narooma to investigate, he was forced to drive onto his destination in Narooma due to his logbook constraints.
Mr Beecham was frustrated that there was not an officer on duty at Bermagui at the time.
“I was disappointed to find the state government had not staffed the local police station and police had to leave Narooma, leaving its staff short, to travel to look for the people who tried to cause a heavy vehicle crash on the bridge,” he said.
“I sorted myself out and made my way to Narooma where I had previously organised accommodation. I had to get medical attention at Narooma for my eyes as whatever the liquid was, had irritated my eyes all night.”
Local police said throwing objects at any moving vehicle was a very serious matter that could result in serious injury or even death. Anyone with information should contact Narooma station on 4476 2044 or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 00.
