Chief Inspector Tony Moodie of the Bega Police said around midnight on Sunday a 19-year-old resident of the Union St house was woken by his small puppy whimpering.
He got up after hearing a crackling sound, then looked out the window and saw the rear corner of his house was alight.
The man, his 18-year-old female partner and their six-month-old baby left the house with their puppy to the street, where they contacted emergency services.
By 12.10am NSW Fire and Rescue was on the scene and began extinguishing the fire, which by then was burning strongly.
Members of the ambulance service examined the three occupants, but they did not require any treatment.
The fire was put out around 2am and police maintained a crime scene guard overnight.
On Monday morning, police from the forensic services group examined the scene and Chief Inspector Moodie said police would continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
The couple was leasing the property.
