In December, councillors resolved to consult with the community on other options and proposals, including undertaking detailed planning for the proposed Tathra Headland walking track.

The bridge, linking the holiday camping and parking area to the beach was due for renewal and was further damaged when the beach was washed away during the severe storm that hit the NSW east coast last year.

However the wonder of nature resulted in a sandbank forming where the bridge once stood, meaning beach access is still available from Thatchers Flat, for now.

Council’s Manager of Leisure and Recreation, John Grady, said with the sandbank in place it is a good time to ask Tathra residents if other options might address some existing problems and deliver better value for money. 

“We fully understand the sandbank is unlikely to be a long term fixture,” he said.

“That being said, and if access is the aim, there are other options worth thinking about, and we are now consulting with the local community to gauge interest.”

The options include: replacing the footbridge; installing about 170 metres of new improved access paths; or directing the funds towards the next stage of planning for the construction of a Tathra Headland walking track.

A combination of installing paths and commencing the planning work might also become an option. 

Consultation will conclude with a face-to-face listening post at Bega Street and Tathra Wharf on Friday, January 20 from 11am to 3pm, following one on Andy Poole Dr on Thursday.

“Sometimes there are alternatives to simply replacing assets,” Mr Grady said. 

Council is interested to hear what people think and this is a great chance to be involved in access improvements in Tathra.”
