Last year the ABC made the decision to decommission music programs The Inside Sleeve, The Live Set, The Daily Planet and The Rhythm Divine.
Save RN Music campaign coordinator Heath Cullen said January 20 will be the last day these shows are aired, so he was encouraging people to flood the ABC with calls and emails to make as much noise as possible.
“It’s just sad,” the Tantawangalo-based musician said.
“They’re successful, brilliant shows that are inexpensive to produce.
“Listeners in regional Australia are going to be worse off under this. Everyone who I’ve spoken to thinks this is a terrible idea.”
He said the ABC had responded to concerns over the cuts by saying it had music on other platforms, such as Double J.
But Mr Cullen said these were mainly digital and only available to most regional audiences via digital television or by streaming online.
“You can’t cart a digital television on the back of a Ute, keep it in a shed, or take it out fishing,” he said.
He said it was good to remember the ABC belonged to everyone and the organisation’s management were public servants employed by the Australian people.
“They work for us, so stand up and make some noise if you think it’s a bad idea,” Mr Cullen said.
Over 20,000 people signed a petition calling to reverse the decision to cut the programs. To join the campaign, visit www.savernmusic.com.
