Children’s authors and entertainers will keep the attention of kids aged up to 13 at the free event with writing and illustrating workshops, poetry, rhythm, rhyme, and dress-ups from 10am to 2pm.
Local author and spokesperson for the Children’s Book Council of Australia (Illawarra South Coast Sub-Branch) said it’s one of many initiatives run throughout the year by the group to encourage reading, writing and illustrating.
“It’s a great time towards end of school holidays when its super hot and you want to do an indoor activity … and you’ve got some really world class people coming to present,” Ms Haines said.
“It’s not just sitting there listening to stories, it’s a lot of hands-on activities.
“There’s really talented people who will actually sit with them and tell them the tools of the trade.”
One of the special guests is Illawarra illustrator Dale Newman who created the artwork for the book KidsGlovz, which recently won a Queensland Literary Award and shortlisted for the CBCA Crichton Award.
Some other guests appearing on the day include comedian and author of Thai-riffic!, Con-nerd and Stuff Happens, Oliver Phommavanh; storyteller and performer Lilli Pang; teacher, trained lawyer and picture book creator Edwina Wyatt; publisher and author Di Bates; and rapper Gabrielle ‘Journey MC’ Jones.
Something we’re really passionate about is promoting ... the love of books and the love of reading and illustrating.
- Demelza Haines
Ms Haines said the event was a great initiative the members of the local CBCA chapter have worked hard to put on.
“Something we’re really passionate about is promoting literacy and books, and generally the love of books and the love of reading and illustrating,” she said.
More than 250 children attends last year’s event.
