The show is nestled in the picturesque Bega Valley, attracting about 1000 visitors to the festivities and displays some of the valley’s finest produce.
Last year’s show was voted as one of the best ever so the pressure is on for this year’s special show.
“This year the Candelo community is celebrating its 130th Annual Country Show and everyone is invited to the party,” promotions manager Gerard Gill said. “The very first Candelo Show gave locals an opportunity to have some time off work and enjoy a day with their families.
“The Show maintains this long tradition by offering a fabulous day out for the children combined with all our country pursuits.
“Showjumping and other ring events continue until the evening while livestock and poultry will be judged at midday. Spectators will get a close up view in the woodchop competition plus there will be sheep shearing, goat milking, wood turning and the pavilion with over 1000 exhibits.
“However this year it will be a special show for the children with face painting, a monster treasure hunt plus ‘giant bubbles’.
“There are pony rides and the jumping castle. Pet the animals in the nursery and have a go in the hat throw contest. Magician ‘The Great Zamboni’ will perform two shows and remember the dog jumping …what a way to finish the day!”
Farm animals at this year’s Candelo Show also include dairy cattle, commercial cattle, dairy goats, poultry and much more.
Ring events include showjumping competitions conducted throughout the day with the Far South Coast Showjumper of the Year series incorporating The Keith Gordon Senior Showjumper of the Year Award and The Graham Johnson Junior Showjumper of the Year Award.
With the first Candelo Show held in 1883, there’s a rich history.
In 1883, the Candelo Horticultural Society held the very first Candelo Show in the Candelo School of Arts with modest pavilion entries.
In 1884, an area of 13.6 acres (5.53 hectares) was officially gazetted as the Candelo Showground.
The Society voted to become the Candelo Agricultural, Horticultural and Dairy Farming Association and the first show under the new name was held on February 26 and 27 in 1885 (the show didn’t run for two years because of natural disasters in the region).
It’s a family day out - adults pay $10, primary school children are FREE, secondary school children pay $2 and for a family $24 maximum.
