On December 15, the first Bega Town Block Party will be held in the town’s centre featuring a huge range of food, shopping, entertainment and activities in a family-friendly environment.
There will be the popular bubble soccer at the Bega Recreation Ground, SCPA night markets and food stalls at Littleton Gardens as well as vinyl and visuals in Rixons Arcade all running from 5pm on the afternoon.
Funhouse Studio’s carnival, at 3 Hill St from 5pm, will have art installations, a bouncing castle and games with DJs from the Bega Sound Collective playing from 8pm.
This is in addition to late-night shopping, buskers along the street, an appearance by Santa and Red Cafe cooking up Nepalese dinners.
There will also be a beer pong tournament at the Grand Hotel from 6pm – an alcohol free event.
Director of Funhouse Studio and event organiser Cayce Hill said one of the most interesting highlights at the block party will be the vinyl and visuals in Rixons Arcade.
Greg Evans from Sugar Sounds will be having a vinyl sale and playing records, while Tony Dean will make projection art out of light.
Also, Traci Chambers from Pink Buoy Studio will hold a fashion show in the arcade as part of her open studio between 5-7pm, showcasing some of the clothes she makes.
“Come down for some fresh tunes and some fresh outfits for the holidays,” Mr Evans said.
Ms Hill said when planning the block party she encouraged people to think a bit more creatively, rather than just staying open late.
“My whole ethos is to make people come together and celebrate our identity as a town,” she said.
“The whole idea of a block party is to incorporate as much of the block as you can.”
My whole ethos is to make people come together and celebrate our identity as a town.
- Funhouse Studio director Cayce Hill
As the activities are taking place between Upper and Carp Streets, she encouraged people to travel between each one by foot, bike or scooter.
Ms Hill, who teaches dance classes, said she initially wanted to put on an end of year show with her 40 dancers.
But after she joined the Bega Chamber of Commerce she thought to continue on the idea of the Bega On The Go promotion, but with something completely different.
So the block party was born, with planning taking place over the last two months.
The Bega Town Block Party is sponsored by the Bega Chamber and supported by Bega Valley Shire Council.
