According to the AAMI Crash Index, in the 12 months from August 2015, 27 per cent of accidents in the Illawarra were caused by hitting a stationary object.
That includes parked cars, poles, trees and other non-moving things.
By comparison, hitting non-moving things accounted for 21 per cent of Sydney drivers’ accidents.
Hitting stationary objects is the second most popular way Illawarra motorists like to have accidents.
Rear-enders are the most common at 29 per cent with failing to give way coming in third with 26 per cent.
Sydney was worse for rear-enders, which accounted for 37 per cent of accidents, and failing to give way which made up 29 per cent of prangs.
AAMI also surveyed 4090 drivers from across the country and discovered only one in five motorists considered themselves to be an impatient driver.
The survey also found nearly 60 per cent admitted to exceeding the speed limit some of the time.
