At the recent Bega Valley Shire Council meeting, councillor Cathy Griff asked staff to investigate if $40,000 could be sourced to support the project.
She said such a request for funds had been raised by the headland wharf and access group in order to get the project “shovel ready”.
She said recent correspondence from the group outlined their meetings with government ministers and potential funding sources.
“Given it complements so much of what is being done at the wharf to date, I believe this warrants speedy action,” Cr Griff said.
While it was suggested major projects of council were to be discussed at the next meeting, Cr Griff’s question was taken on notice by BVSC director of community, relations and leisure Anthony Basford who said he would need to look further into whether sourcing the funds would impact on other projects.
Meanwhile, members of the Tathra Headland and Wharf Access Group met with Member for Bega Andrew Constance to discuss the pathway.
The preparatory stages necessary for this community-based project to evolve are lengthy and the volunteers promoting this track were briefed on strategies that will take the project forward.
At the meeting, Mr Constance outlined procedures required at this stage and appropriate funding opportunities that would apply to this project in the future.
Spokeswoman Pip Marshman indicated a significant and worthwhile amount of time had been given by members of the group and the community to get the project to the present point of development.
Further to this, members of the group are confident the track, once completed, will provide significant cultural, historical, economic and well-being benefits to both visitors and local community members.
The group has also started a Facebook page to keep the community up to date with news of the project proposal.
