The instrument, used in the theme of Dr Who and the Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations”, is played by Chris Zanko in the six-piece shock rock band The Pinheads.
“It sort of fits with the aesthetic we have,” Zanko said.
“I don’t even know if there’s a proper way of learning it, you got to just feel it out.”
The group of 20-somethings love for visual art and Tuesday night bowling led them to form the group in 2013, with their first album soon to be released through Farmer & The Owl, part of independent label Inertia.
“Wildfire” is the first single to do the rounds, a taste of what’s to come from the new record and east coast tour which will bring them to Wollongong’s Rad Bar on January 12, co-headlining with Drunk Mums.
The much anticipated debut album was recorded in the shed belonging to the parents of brothers Jez Pinhead (vocalist) and Luke Player (lead guitar).
“Like a big DIY project ,” Zanko said.
The brothers, along with bassist Tanya Avanus, are usually the main songwriters before completing compositions with the rest of the group.
“I want Pinnies to be the first band to play in space,” said bassist Tanya, who’s hoping to get on Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic craft.
The PINHEADS are:
- Luke Player – lead guitar
- Jez Player – vocals
- Tex Crick – organ
- Tanya Avanus – bass
- Alastair Webster – guitar
- Chris Zanko – percussion/theremin
- James Kates – drums
