A huge reception with many notable Aboriginal leaders as guests, including Michael Long, who will give Merryn away was then held at her gallery at Central Tilba.
Arrernte woman and reconciliation advocate, Merryn Apma has spent years working to improve the lives of Aboriginal people. Her activism took off in 2004 when she accompanied AFL star Michael Long on his journey on foot from Geelong to Parliament House.
The famous journey became known as the Long Walk, and is celebrated every year. Merryn served as chairperson of the Long Walk board for many years, and out of the campaigns success she co-founded an annual event called the Long Women’s Lunch.
Merryn is a member of the Stolen Generation, and worked for many years with the Bringing Them Home commission, helping people who were taken from their families under government law to reconnect with their people and country
The ceremony was filmed for a segment on The Point with Stan Grant on NITV, with a focus on the stolen generation story.
