The small but poignant service to commemorate Remembrance Day was run by the Eden RSL sub branch at the Eden War Memorial was attended by around 50 locals including representatives from Eden Marine High School and Eden Public School.
Eden RSL vice president Al Greening led the service, reflecting on the continuing threat of terrorism and how this occupies the minds and security of people in many nations around the world.
“We continue to be aware of the deliberate destruction of human lives and property and the desperate and dangerous people responsible for it,” Mr Greening said.
“These are the same people who threaten our service men and women as they seek to preserve peace and security in a growing number of countries in the world. Very few families in this country have not been touched by war and we are now aware of the dangers our service men and women face in overseas countries.
“And there is no assurance that they will soon be free of their responsibilities.”
With poppies on their chest and their eyes on the Australian Flag, the crowd stood for the Ode, a minute or silence and the Reveille, performed by bugler Chris Greenwood.
As the ceremony ended the Sub Branch members stopped to acknowledge the tireless efforts of Barrie Beck who’s impressive gardening skills have resulted in a beautiful row of Flanders poppies along the side of the Eden RSL Hall.
Mr Beck, the hall custodian, said he has been growing the poppies at his house for seven years and had planted and attempted to grow them at the hall three times previously.
“This is the fourth time I’ve tried to grow them. I planted them four months ago and wasn’t sure if they would work. This is the first time they have made it past rabbit height, they’re rabbit proof now,” Mr Beck said.
