Ex-service men and women, SRC representatives from classes at Merimbula Public School and a small gathering of around 60 locals gathered at the Beach St War Memorial for the 11am service.
Merimbula RSL sub-branch president Alan Browning led the service.
He reflected on a global war that saw 17million people, including 62,000 Australians killed in action, while a further 20million men, women and children were “mutilated and maimed”.
“Within 10 years, conflict had gone from hand-to-hand combat to aerial bombardments and devastating artillery that could be fired from kilometres away,” Mr Browning said.
“The atrocities were truly horrific...but the conflicts led to stories of true heroism.”
He said those who fought should be remembered for their strength and fierceness in fighting for what they believed in.
“May they rest in peace forever more.”
