Teacher at The Illawarra Grammar School Kath McMahon said there are a few key strategies for mums and dads to help teach their children to be without them.
“Starting school can sometimes be daunting for parents but armed with a few key strategies, your worries can be pushed aside,” Mrs McMahon said.
Being a role model of confidence, reading books regularly, craft work to build motor skills and having a positive attitude are all “tried and tested” ideas, she said.
“When talking to your child about anything new or uncertain, frame your words positively, demonstrating how to be strong and flexible,” Mrs McMahon said.
“Building upper body strength by playing on park equipment will actually enhance your child’s ability to control fine motor equipment such as pencils.
“There are lots of ways to encourage mathematical concepts at home using everyday conversation and language. During playtime in the bath ask questions requiring your child to think and explore answers.”
TIGS will be holding a free information session for parents of pre-kinder kids with more tips and strategies on Tuesday November 8 from 6pm.
