The fundraiser is an initiative of the Children’s Medical Research institute at Westmead Hospital held throughout October, when cyclists set themselves a target – kilometres, dollars or both.
During the month, Mr van Bracht has been logging his rides via GPS while collecting support from across the region, including fellow Tathra MTB Club members and BVSC work colleagues.
On Wednesday he hit his 500km target and is nudging $1400 raised! His longest ride so far was a 131km trek from Tathra, through Wallagoot and Bega to Morans Crossing, returning via Candelo and Kanoona.
Nationally, more than 10,000 people have raised in excess of $2.2million.
“Like a lot of people I have lost family members to cancer over the years and this seemed like a good way to honour their memory, but more importantly raise money for research into kids cancer,” Mr van Bracht said.
“When you read about their daily battles and pain the kids are going through, it’s the least I could do.
“I have reached my 500km target on my mountain bike, but I am just going to keep going and see what I can reach by the end of the challenge.”
Mr van Bracht thanked everyone who has donated so far and encouraged people who would like to contribute to this great cause to go online and make a donation.
All funds raised will support the Children's Medical Research Institute to continue its work to develop innovative treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer. All donations are made online and are tax deductible.
