Blue Diamond winner Extreme Choice returned with a sensational turn of foot to beat the older sprinters in Friday night's Moir Stakes at Moonee Valley and  then Russian Revolution led all the way in the Roman Consul Stakes at Randwick on Saturday, retaining his perfect record.

An Easter purchase for $320,000 by Newgate's Henry Field, Russian Revolution keeps taking every step up, vanquishing   the Golden Rose winner and Golden Slipper winner.

"They are three of the best colts in the country and he has got out in front and they haven't  been able to reel him in ," Field said. "It is a great effort from a horse we have had a big opinion of, but he is only going to get better.

Russian Revolution took control of the race going to the front and Kerrin McEvoy was at his best, letting him run along just fast enough to keep the lead and leaving himself with plenty in the tank. Meanwhile, odds-on favourite Astern was six lengths away  last. He came with a charge but had too much to do.

"We got it easy through the first three furlongs and then he just picked it up and they had to catch me. Full credit to the horse, he has done a great job," McEvoy said

"I could hear something coming. I knew it was either Astern or Capitalist. It was all guns blazing in the last 50 metres. He is a quality little colt in his own right. His best is ahead of him for sure."

The margin at the end was a head to Astern with Capitalist 1-1/4 lengths back in third.

"He has done what everything has been scared  to do all day - lead - and he was there for them to beat him," trainer Peter Snowden said. "He is just a winner and you like those horses."

Stewards did ask James McDonald why he decided to ride Astern with cover and went back to last. He ran 32.29 seconds for his last 600 but still  couldn't pick up Russian Revolution.

McDonald told stewards: "We spent the last three months teaching him to settle and that's what I wanted to do. "[If I went forward] I would have wrecked my horse,"

Stewards asked trainer John O'Shea to confirm the riding instructions and took a look at his Golden Rose run before chief steward Marc Van Gestel accepted McDonald's ride and said that he "couldn't be critical in the circumstances".

"It was  near Impossible, considering they went through the first half of the race in a second slower than standard," Van Gestel said. "But considering how you have ridden him in the past we couldn't be critical in the circumstances."

O'Shea was delighted with Astern's effort, even though he was beaten.

"I don't think he lost any admirers with that run and he is heading to the Coolmore Stud Stakes, which is going to be a great race," O'Shea said.

Blake Shinn was also looking towards the Coolmore with Capitalist.

"I thought he ran really well, little bit keen in the first 200 but once I got behind Russian Revolution he settled well. They ran some slick sectionals and I felt at the 300 he was there to win," Shinn said. "He got a little bit tired late but he has got good improvement up his sleeve; got beat by two very good horses and I think going to the Coolmore I'm pretty comfortable with where he is at."
