The Bega Birth To Kindergarten Reading Project recently commissioned by Cobargo artist and former librarian, teacher and graphic artist, Naomi Lewis, to produce illustrations promoting early literacy, using grant funds from the Clubs NSW ClubsGRANT program.
“We are keen to let people know how important books are for babies and we are thrilled with Naomi’s illustrations,” spokesperson Helen Stafford said.
The program’s aim is to provide a book to each baby born in the region, and emphasises the need to communicate about literacy to children from day one.
Since 2002 over 4000 books have been given away to the region’s newest arrivals.
“Our aim is to promote reading and the love of books and that can start as soon as a baby is born,” founding member and Bega Valley children’s librarian Anne Moore said.
“We rely on fundraising and grants to purchase books to give away.”
Ms Lewis has generously given permission for three of her illustrations included in the pamphlet to be framed and hung in the Community Health section of the new South East Regional Hospital, Ms Moore said.
Kindergarten children from Bega Valley Public School will watercolour the black and white sketches.
The Birth To Kindergarten group meets once a quarter and meetings last for about 30 minutes, Ms Moore said.
New volunteers and their ideas are always welcome and if you would like to be involved in supporting literacy in the region phone Anne Moore on 6499 2242.
