The group consists of Thea Rossen on percussion, Kinga Janiszewski on double bass and Luke Carbon on clarinet and saxophone.
As they have an unusual combination of instruments for classical and chamber music, they make their own arrangements for well-known pieces and cover a wide spectrum of genres including gypsy and tango.
On Tuesday, they spoke after leading a story time for children at the Bermagui library, where they read The Hungry Caterpillar and played music for the kids.
“The kids loved the music and instruments, they all came up afterwards and wanted to play them,” Ms Rossen laughed.
“Kids have this amazing way of connecting intrinsically to the music, while adults seem to have some inhibitions.”
As part of the two-week Four Winds artists in residence program that brought the trio to the Bega Valley, the performers aim to engage with the community as well as share their talents and experience with younger local musicians.
When asked how to engage people with classical and chamber music, Mr Carbon said it was important not to talk down musically to any audience.
“If you liken it to art, different audiences will interpret artworks in different ways, and it is the same with music,” he said.
“Someone who has trained to listen to Beethoven will get something else out of a piece than a seven-year-old will, but the seven-year-old’s response is still valid.
“What we do is novel and extremely special to us, and if we do it properly it is extremely special to the audience as well.”
While they formed their trio in February, the three are current students at the Australian National Academy of Music and have played together in various forms over the last 18 months.
In the Bega Valley, they hope to connect with the area so the place can influence their improvisations.
“We are doing this residency to find our style as a trio, because we are quite new so it’s one way to find out who we are,” Ms Janiszewski said.
The Paper Plane Trio will perform a concert with support by Sapphire Coast musicians on October 1 from 2pm at Four Winds’ Windsong Pavilion, Barragga Bay.
Adults are $15 while 18 years and under are free. Tickets are at www.fourwinds.com.au.
At the concert, the three will perform as a trio, with solo and duo performances.
They will play Spiegel Im Spiegel by Arvo Pärt, Binyang by Ross Edwards, as well as a piece the younger audience may recognise – Happy by Pharrell Williams.
