He was told he and his new bride are off a fishing trip of a lifetime to Vanuatu and to be featured on the show, with a chance of winning thousands of dollars of fishing gear.
Ryan had to climb down from scaffolding on the building site he was working at in Dalmeny to get the good news from fishing television show host Mark Berg, who together with his crew had just driven the six hours up from Sydney to make the surprise announcement.
His wife Alice was also there as she was one that nominated him for the surprise trip, as was his mum Christa, who was equally excited.
The couple were only just recently married and unusually for the show, Alice gets to go along as well, as the whole trip will double as a belated honeymoon.
Normally Mark arrives and surprises a fisherman or fisherwoman but leaves the nominating partner behind, but this time the couple get to go together.
Alice said this latest competition was advertised as a fishing trip for a couple who love to fish together. She decided to nominate them for the trip, as they hadn’t even had a chance to go a honeymoon since being married at Easter time.
“It’s almost too good to be true,” Alice said.
And the couple don’t have much time to pack as they depart Narooma on Saturday for the trip, which will entail time at a fishing lodge and a night on a luxury “mother ship” fishing vessel.
Mum Christa said it was very hard to hold in the secret from Ryan for weeks but it was all worth it when Mark Berg showed up to make his surprise announcement.
We will have to see if Alice outfishes Ryan again!
