During rounds against Bermagui the Sea Eagles compete for the Kenny Jack Cup, who was a clubman for both teams and played in Tathra’s 1996 premiership.
Last week the club celebrated a premiership reunion and retained the Kenny Jack Cup with former players presenting Casey Jack with his father’s number 24 jersey during celebrations.
Senior coach Brad McBain said it was a touching tribute to a great clubman and player with the Sea Eagles now staring down their biggest challenge of the season.
The Sea Eagles will take on the Merimbula Diggers on the Berrambool Oval, heartland for SCAFL finals play.
“This will certainly be the biggest game we’ve played so far and we’re looking forward to the challenge,” McBain said.
“We can’t wait to get out their and have a crack at the Diggers on their home ground.”
The Sea Eagles bounced back from a three-week absence to a massive scoreline against Bermagui, but McBain said the Breakers were up against it prior to the game and a test of fitness was yet to come.
“Training has been good and the boys are enthusiastic, but we need this battle with the Diggers and we’ll see any toll we face for those three weeks off,” he said.
“We know how we want to play, but that might not come off if the opposition can get a good hold of the ball.”
McBain said the Diggers boasted a leading pack in the centre and it could be a decisive area of play for Saturday’s result.
“They’re a quality midfield, but we won’t be looking to knock down too much on any of their players,” he said.
“Previously we might have relied too heavily on one or two players, but this year we’ve got a fantastic team effort and we’ll go in guns blazing.”
One boon from the big delay was injuries, with the club showing no concerns or niggles in the line-up.
“We’re looking pretty fresh leading into the final few games on the injury front,” McBain said.
“Playing on this bigger ground is something that has been talked about and it’s an opportunity to show what we’re capable of.”
The Sea Eagles will then face the Eden Whalers before a final bye round leading into finals.
The Sea Eagles will travel to Merimbula on Saturday to play the Diggers in reserve grade and senior play.
Reserves will take the paddock from 1.15pm with the senior game at 2.30pm.
