“If you have a dream follow it, you will have ups and downs but if you keep persisting you will get there,” the 19-year-old said.
Mr Lonesborough is Bega’s new face of the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience or (AIME).
Being involved in the program in 2013 changed the way he envisioned his future and inspired him to volunteer in 2015, leading to his new role as mentor to the region’s young people.
“The program gave me the desire and the belief I could succeed at uni,” he said.
“I’ve seen people who don’t have that support struggle.”
AIME centre manager Steve Mitchell was so impressed with Mr Lonesborough’s work as a volunteer he didn’t hesitate offering him a mentoring position.
“Ryan giving his time for us show’s he’s a leader of the next generation,” he said.
