Needed elsewhere
If one question is asked of our PM on his visit to the South Coast to shore up Peter Hendy's campaign it ought to be this; "Mornington Island needs urgent repairs before next wet season according to locals. Why spend the money here when it is more urgently needed elsewhere?" Source, the Brekky Wrap.

Blind to heritage
That some Bega Valley Shire councillors believe that the location of the Dr Evershed Memorial Clock Tower is not relevant to its historic significance is evidence only of their fundamental ignorance in heritage matters.
While the Bega Valley Shire Residents and Ratepayers Association (BVSRRA) believes councillors are entitled to their own views, it shouldn’t be necessary to point out that they are actually elected to represent the views and interests of our residents and ratepayers.
That council would ignore overwhelming community opposition to its plans to desecrate the Dr Evershed Memorial, while acknowledging it did not bother to complete even the most basic level of due diligence before taking its decision, not only exposes it as being totally out of touch with the community, but also incompetent and certainly not “fit for the future”.
What greater service could Dr Montague Evershed have ever performed than to remind us of the true value and meaning of the word “community” and the importance of our being willing to stand up and defend it against those who simply don’t know or care?
John Richardson, BVSRRA
Vested interests?
Awesome editorial on the clock tower fiasco Ben. I am wondering if the council is doing what it wants because it (or certain members) have vested interests in development around Bega town?
Does the clock need to be removed for truck traffic that is expected down at the proposed redevelopment of the Spenco site?
Just as Littleton Gardens was remodelled so the view from the new executive offices was clear, are they hoping to keep clearing everything out of the way in the name of “progress”?

Ignorant of rules
It amazes me how ignorant some drivers are of the most basic road rules.
Today I was pulled up in Carp St to allow for a parked car to pull out in front of the chemist, so that I could park in her space. She was indicating to exit, as I was to enter, when a four-wheel drive overtook me, crossing double lines to do so.
He was followed by five others.
Had the lady driver continued to exit – as was her right – a collision could have occurred with any of the impatient drivers trying to reach the traffic lights before they changed. Ironically, when I was ready to leave the same spot some 20 minutes later, another four-wheel driver was waiting to enter with several vehicles behind, but fortunately those drivers had the intelligence and courtesy to wait until I was safely out and the new driver in before they moved.
It is not just seniors who need to be tested on their knowledge of the road rules.

Public safety priority
To the BVSC’s John Grady (Letters, 6/5) I was thankful the council mowed the park in Bunyarra Drive. Last summer there were two sightings of snakes and with long grass we don’t want any fires.
For public safety I hope the council will still maintain the park as I contacted the Department of Housing a while back, but it did nothing about the matter.
The residents who live nearby pay their rates and taxes, which in turn provides jobs and keeps the council workers employed. Public safety must come first at all times.
