Kate Mamone, Morgan Chapple, Amanda Hayward and Tegan Williams went into the recent Seachange Startup Camp with no ideas and no real clue as to what was ahead of them.
Despite this, their website and app idea, Paw Prints, landed them a prize worth around $3000.
Around 30 budding entrepreneurs in 11 teams pitched various startup business ideas at the fifth annual “camp” held at the Bega Valley Regional Learning Centre in Merimbula on the weekend, April 30 – May 1.
In a Shark Tank-style pitch, each proposal was assessed by the judging panel consisting of business heavyweights and entrepreneur mentors.
There were several prizes to be won, but once the pitches were finished, Anna Pino of Lighthouse Innovation in Canberra was so impressed by the Paw Prints team she offered them a bonus prize, $3000 worth of consultancy.
Paw Prints is a website and app that creates a personal profile for a person’s pet. It contains medical history including what medications the pet takes and recent vet visits. The site will also have a postcode search component which will inform the owner of possible risks in the area such as ticks, snakes, fox baiting or diseases.
Startup camp coordinator Liam O’Duibhir said he was glad to see the women do well in what is usually a male-dominated field.
The Startup Camp was one of many activities held as part of Bega Valley’s Regional Innovation Week.
