The report sheet for Sunday’s shoot at Bega Gun Club said windy, and boy was that an apt description of the conditions. The sun shone, the clouds flew and the wind blew. Twenty-one shooters turned up for the second round of the Fimac Engineering Handicap Shield, all eager to gain points towards the final result in November. The remainder of the program consisted of 40T point-score and 20pair Deauville Doubles shot off 22 metres.

The 40 target point-score opened proceedings with targets shot across both layouts. Rosscoe Hartley scored 98/120 to take C Grade with George Toyne in second place with 92/120. In B Grade, Mark Evans was successful with a score of 110/120 to pip second placer, Brian Moffitt by four points. A Grade went to Tony Gray who scored 112/120, with Simon Buckley second on 103/120.
Event two was the second round of the Fimac and to add to handicaps, the wind began to gust. A Grade, Simon Buckley dropped only one target for 24/25 off 19m, with B Grader John Walker collecting 23/25 for second off 17m. C Grader, George Toyne, shooting from 15m took third with a score of 22/26 after he and Mark Evans (17m) had a one target shoot off, both having finished on 21. After two rounds, Robert Taylor, Peter Johnston and Simon Buckley would be amongst the leading group for 2016. Still two rounds to go.
The 20 pair Deauville Doubles and the wind really provided some fun for the final event. Many had trouble standing up, let alone trying to hit targets from 22 metres back. Not an event that we shoot at Bega very often as was clearly demonstrated by the scores. George Toyne and Mick Diss did the honours with a masterful 11 pair – well it looked very masterful to the rest of us. Dad, Brian Smith, took son, Charlie under control and between them they collected 10 pair for second place. The rest of us are still working out what happened.
High gun for the day went to Chris Rowland after a shoot-off with Charlie Smith. Brian Smith started the shoot raffle, $496 worth in fine form but took pity on the treasurer on the fourth target. Once again, the meat tray.
On June 5 Bega shoots another of our feature events for the year, with the running of the 100T RV Repairs Continental Open Championship, sponsored by Phil and Pauline Body. Practice as usual from 9am with shoot commencing at 10am.
Congratulations to Junior shooter, James Body on his making the Southern Zone trap team. James will compete in October at Wagga against all the other NSW Zone teams.
