Shameful decision
As a Bega-born baby boomer, I must write to say how disappointed I am at hearing of the possible plans to remove the town’s clock. It is one of the few remaining pieces of Bega history that gives a feature to the township and main street.

Dr Evershed and the Bega people deserve better than what the council are planning to do to his memorial.
He gave over 50 years of his life and service to Bega, and he was important and loved enough for the people of Bega to build such an important feature as the clock tower in the main street.
What makes Bega special is its people, history, and historical features. And yet it sounds as if you are attempting to turn Bega into a bland township, stripped of its character! How dare you consider removing such an important town feature? It sounds like you care about your businesses rather than people.
My grandfather, Jack Gordon (John Herbert Gordon), would be turning in his grave if he ever found out that you amateurs are looking at desecrating such an important town memorial.
He was the chairman of the Bega Valley County Council for 16 years because he was thoughtful, cared about Bega, and people respected his moral and ethical compass which didn’t worship money over people.
You should be completely ashamed for even considering this...and those supporting this sacked!

Load of rubbish
About four months ago, someone dumped a trailer load of old mattresses, cushions and plastic chemical containers at the peaceful bush bus stop at the end of my road.
“Beauty!” I thought, I can use the info on one of those shiny new signs that popped up last year along roadsides across the Bega Valley Shire, inviting us to Report Illegal Dumping.
That way maybe the rubbish will get removed without me having to ring council, repeatedly, to no avail (even the asbestos I reported two years ago is still there in a makeshift quarry/motorcycle playground).
So I rang the number. Then I pushed several more numbers, and some more, spoke to a machine or two made a cup of tea, pushed some more numbers and, finally, spoke to an actual person.
We’ll call her Brenda and she was most helpful. Brenda heard my complaint, agreed that such behaviour was not on and asked what suburb I lived in.
“Easy”, said Brenda, “I’ll just look that up…Yep, here it is, your local council is Bega Valley Shire Council”
Me: “Yes, I know…”
Brenda: “Well, you’ll need to ring them”
Me: “But, I would have rung them if your sign didn’t suggest I ring you first!!”
I didn’t have much else to say to Brenda. And I was starting to get a headache. And I still had to ring council, so we said goodbye.
Oh, and the rubbish? It’s still there.

Resorting to platitudes
I note with some bemusement the abundance of Anzac brochures put out by our local serving Liberal member.
While I am unsure of his personal ethics, he is a member of a party that has brazenly attacked our human rights commissioner for political purposes, ignored the condemnation of the United Nations Refugee Commission and bullied medical personnel to stop them reporting cruelty in our internment camps.
They have also threatened to remove funding from public education and tried to eviscerate our TAFE system.
As a person who lost several uncles in the Great War, I would like the Liberal state member or his Federal counterpart to explain how current Liberal party policies increase our Liberty, Fraternity and Equality, without resorting to Anzac platitudes.
