The pass is a small two-lane road that features a number of hairpin bends so sharp that large vehicles such as buses need to go forward and back up several times to negotiate them.
The pass is regularly blocked in the event of accidents or breakdowns – the most recent happened earlier this month when a truck was stuck on one of those hairpin bends when forced the closure of the pass for several hours.
A Roads and Maritime Services spokeswoman said they were devising a plan for the road.
“Roads and Maritime Services is preparing a corridor strategy for the Illawarra Highway, including Macquarie Pass, which will consider options to improve the reliability and safety of the route and provide better long-term management of the road,” the spokeswoman said.
She said the pass was not an approved route for large trucks such as B-Doubles.
The spokeswoman said about 3500 vehicles used the pass every day.
“This is in line with traffic volumes on other similar two-lane rural roads,” she said.
