Tathra Beach Supermarket was the first in town to take on the reusable shopping bags, but there are hopes the idea will spread.
Boomerang Bags are hand-sewn bags given away free to shoppers, on the proviso they either re-use them, or take them back to be “borrowed” by others.
It’s a community-driven initiative tackling plastic pollution.
Tathra Beach Supermarket owner Tim Crisp said he has already been encouraging his customers to bring along their own bags, charging 10 cents for single-use plastic bags since March.
“A lot of our produce we sell is packed in plastic as well,” Mr Crisp said.
“As consumers, as a community, as shopkeepers, we need to be aware of and support products that are sustainable.”
South Coast coordinator Dorte Planert said sewing Boomerang Bags is “like an addiction” for the volunteer bag-makers and they love seeing them put to good use.
There has been a good response to sewing workshops in the shire with demand sure to increase now Boomerang Bag are beginning to show up in shops.
Sprout at Eden was also among the first to take up the initiative.
