As part of Youth Week, Wandarma Aboriginal Drug and Alcohol Services held a family and youth community day at the Bega Recreation Ground, attended by Dylan Farrell of St George Illawarra Dragons.

It was a day for the whole community, Indigenous and non-Indigenous children. 

Mr Farrell led the 40 primary and secondary school aged kids who attended in skill games and football drills.

There were plenty of smiles when he joined in for a game of touch football. 

“It’s a day to keep kids active, instead of sitting around home and getting into trouble,” Wandarma’s youth programs coordinator Arthur Scott said. 

“Everyone loves football, at least most people do.” 

Mr Scott has always had a passion to do sports with kids and thought it was lucky he was good friends with Mr Farrell, as they grew up in Nowra. 

It was great to see watch someone from his home town go on to make a career in the sport, he said. 

“It’s been good to see him have a crack at it, knowing how hard it is to make it to the top level,” Mr Scott said.

With a stall that featured information on the consequences of an inactive lifestyle and the dangers of second hand smoke as well as on keeping healthy, drugs and alcohol, the day also aimed to encourage children to make good choices in life.
