First grade had a close, but well-deserved 22-16 win, the ladies’ league tag had a fantastic win and reserve grade was narrowly beaten.
It was the first round of the Group 16 competition and a good start to the year was important.
Devils’ Todd Wright and US import Rodrigues Ceasar scored great tries in the first half with a conversion by Tyson Moritz, but Cooma went to the break leading 12-10.
An early injury to Todd Ayers meant the boys had to dig deep but that's exactly what they did.
In the second half Cooma took an early lead, but tries to Todd and Clint Wright and conversions by Tyson and Koorin Campbell saw the final score at 22-16.
Best on the day were Todd Wright, Todd Bennett and Scott Curry having his first experience in the front row. A great start to the year for the first grade.
Reggies show promise
The new-look reserve grade acquitted themselves well and were unlucky to be beaten 30-26 by the home team.
Despite a try to co-coach Koorin Campbell, converted by Jared McMillan, the Devils trailed 6-12 at the break.
Second half tries to Matt Swadling, Gus Wilton, Mitch Parsons and John Kelly made a Devils win possible, but Cooma managed to hold on to win 30-26, five tries all, just a couple of conversions the difference.
An encouraging start to the year with a really full bench at the longest away game. Players’ player was Matty Swadling, and also strong were James Streater, Gus Wilton and Squiney.
A big welcome to the seniors to the under 18s boys, who will really make this team something this year.
Ladies fly past Fillies
The ladies’ league tag side put on an magnificent exhibition of football winning 54-nil against the Cooma Fillies.
Under the leadership of coach Tegan Mundy, the girls completely outclassed Cooma.
Lilly Bennett, fresh out of the terrific junior league tag team from last year, scored an amazing six tries with Finn Dibden, Janaija Parsons and Jamie-Anne Wright also adding tries.
Jamie-Anne kicked six goals and Lilly one. The team elected Finn Dibden as the players’ player, but all the team contributed really well to the result.
Next week the Devils take on the Bega Roosters at Bill Smyth Oval.
Ladies’ tag starts at 3.30pm, reserves at 4.30pm and first grade at 6pm.
