When this year’s Sydney Fine Food Show results were announced, Sam, Jo and Gary Rodely of Tathra Oysters received a very special surprise.
This year the family owned and run business again claimed the award for the Champion Sydney Rock Oyster Exhibit at the Sydney Royal Fine Food Show (for the 13th time).
In addition to this award, they received the first ever Champion Aquaculture Product Award over the 27 classes judged in Aquaculture. This inaugural award continues a remarkable run of firsts for Tathra Oysters at these prestigious awards.
The firm won the first ever Oyster Championship ribbon in 2001, the first ever Gold Medal for oysters in 2002, the first ever Award of Outstanding Excellence in Fine Food in 2004 and the first ever Royal Agricultural Society’s President’s Medal in 2006.
Gary Rodely from Tathra Oysters said, “We have certainly been very blessed over the years with these wonderful awards. Our greatest blessing is to be growing our oysters in the fabulous Nelson’s Lake.
“Nelson’s is such a special location, being surrounded by national park, and I think this comes through in the flavour of our oysters.
“Oysters are very much products of their environment and no other oysters in NSW are grown in such pristine wilderness as the Tathra Oysters farms.”

Oyster growing is very much a labour of love for The Rodely’s and the whole family is involved.
They have been operating their business for over 28 years and during their season, from December to June, locals and tourists can call in to their Oyster Shop in Reservoir Street in Tathra.
Tathra Oysters only grow Sydney Rock Oysters, known for their delicate sweetness.
The Rodely’s are very proud to be producing food in such a sustainable, low impact industry.
“Maintaining the environment at our beautiful location is paramount to us,” Gary said.
“We even use our waste shell to help maintain the steep access tracks into our farm. This ensures no heavy equipment need be used in road grading, thus ensuring sediment inputs into the system are minimal.”
Another recent highlight for Tathra Oysters was their inclusion in the Great Australian Cookbook that was released in September last year.
The cookbook has been on the bestsellers list since its release and features a double page photograph of Jo and Gary sharing some oysters and a laugh at the farm and two oyster recipes, including Jo’s now famous Oyster Pies.
