For the second semester in 2015, SCAC ran a subject called Tri Hards for a group of its students - a triathlon elective where the teenagers trained hard for an event on December 12.
Held at Callala Beach near Jervis Bay, this open event was run by Elite Energy and attended by at least 700 people.
Several students came first in their age categories: Alby Kean in the sprint as well as Meg Hawken and Alexander Waddell in the enticer.
In their respective enforcer races, Samantha Gordon came fifth and David Fantham sixth, while Tommy Hawken came second in the enticer.
Also, the team of Bernie Anderson, Emmyt Moon and Brody Johns came second in their team sprint.
“I expected that they would do well, based on their training and the motivation they put into it, but I didn’t know they would do as well as they did,” Tri Hards teacher Paul Callaghan said.
First place winners 16-year-old Meg and 14-year-old Alby said they chose the subject to do something different.
Despite the challenge of the triathlon both felt pretty good after they won their races and had different ways of pushing through when the going got tough.
“I think the school prepared us pretty well,” Meg said.
“I just think about the end, how I want to finish it.”
Mr Callaghan said 2015 was the first time the Tri Hards subject was run at SCAC, but it would be run again this year.
“It’s about trying to get them [students] into the mindset of setting a challenge and testing themselves, then going on to achieve something and have fun,” he said.
