Australian Seabird Rescue would like to fix that, and that was the main reason behind their visit to the Eurobodalla on Thursday.
At present, Barry Hart is the only Australian Seabird Rescue member in Batemans Bay, and South Coast Branch ASR coordinator Kirsten Hort would like to see more people back him up.
ASR helps sick and injured seabirds, in particular the charismatic pelican, many of which get tangled in fishing line and the like and have fish hooks embedded in them.
“Training is provided, and the methods taught make it safe for the person and the bird,” Ms Hort said.
“We also clean up areas that are frequented by seabirds, removing potentially harmful items, and we do fundraising and educational campaigns.” Ms Hort said.
“We work with fisher folk on practical ways to avoid injuries to birds.”
