Discussion of removing the Dr Evershed Memorial Clock Tower threatens another item of cultural and historic significance.

The following facts ought to be considered.

The landscape master plan commissioned by Bega Valley Shire Council from Spiire Group at great expense identifies this memorial and its location for enhancement as an important landmark.

The clock tower provides a well-used pedestrian refuge for people crossing Gipps St.

Claims of “near misses” with vehicles are meaningless. The lack of timely (pun intended) maintenance by BVSC has damaged the clock.

By following Spiire Group’s recommendations for traffic calming devices in the CBD, both pedestrians and the Dr Evershed Memorial Clock will be kept safe.

It’s a sad day for dog owners at Kianniny.

It seems “Big Brother” has caught up at last with all locals and visitors alike who take their dogs for a swim at Kianniny boat ramp. 

We are now longer to able to let our dogs swim off leash there anymore.

How we are going to swim our dogs on a two-metre leash?

I don’t know, maybe we can put a 20-metre rope on them and let them all get tied up together.

It appears that we now have a new ranger in town and he is determined to stop all we people that have swum our kids and dogs together there for generations.

I pointed out that there is no signage stating that dogs must be on leash at all times, but then was informed that signs would have to erected everywhere in town and in every area, and that is not feasible.

During the many years we have taken our dogs there I have never seen or heard of a dog or child being savaged at this spot, as all owners have been most responsible.

Having been told we would be “excused” this time, but not to do it again, we are feeling a little irate.

Apparently we are one of many who are feeling the same way, and he appears to be patrolling this area often during the day.

Yes, we know that there is an off-leash area up the beach, but sometimes the surf is too rough for swimming, and many of we older citizens find it a little hard to walk on the sand, particularly if you have a disability.

My husband was treated recently in the Bega Hospital emergency department.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to the doctor, nurses and admin staff, all of whom were wonderful, caring, friendly, empathetic and very professional.

These people restored our faith in the public hospital system and we can’t speak highly enough of the care we received.

Our new Bega hospital will certainly be in good hands with staff like this looking after patients.

As a WIRES member I was aware of a number of seagull chicks being rescued after being thrown out of boats.

I commend the rescuers and carers.

I would like to suggest an idea for boat owners to try to avoid seagulls nesting “inappropriately” .

I am trialing a “bird scare humming line” in my garden, which makes a buzzing sound in the breeze when fixed tight and can deter birds.

It is recommended for boats, orchards and cropping.

This product may also help with warding off fruit bats and reduce the use of hazardous netting.
