Council’s manager of community, culture and information, Simon Schweitzer, said International Women's Day is a time for the world to acknowledge the economic, political and social achievements of women.
“An IWD scholarship of $500 will be awarded to a local woman who lives in the shire aged between 18 and 25 who shows potential in any field of endeavour,” he said.
"I encourage any young local woman to apply for the scholarship and outline their area of potential, whether it is business, music, community, arts, sport or another field."

Mr Schweitzer said the IWD scholarship was offered to encourage young women to reach for their goals, whatever they may be, and to recognise and celebrate the valuable contribution that young women make in our community.
“I encourage any young local woman to apply for the scholarship and outline their area of potential, whether it is business, music, community, arts, sport or another field,” Mr Schweitzer said.
Last year’s scholarship recipients will also join the celebrations and reflect on their year.
In 2015, a strong field of applicants led to the awarding of four scholarships to four deserving recipients; Kaela McCulloch of Wapengo, Georgia Shellard of Candelo, Jacinta Griffin of Bega and Lily Nugent of Pambula.
Applications for this year’s scholarship will close at 4.30pm on Friday, February 5.
The scholarship guidelines and the application form can be downloaded from www.begavalley.nsw.gov.au > Community & Leisure > Community Support > Awards Grants & Scholarships > International Women’s Day Scholarships.

The successful applicant will be invited to attend a presentation at an IWD event at the Spiral Gallery in Bega on Friday, March 4.
This year’s IWD theme is “Pledge For Parity” and people around the world are urged to pledge to take a meaningful step towards gender parity.
It is hoped the theme will inspire people to help women and girls achieve their ambitions, call for gender-balanced leadership, respect and value difference, develop more inclusive and flexible cultures or root out workplace bias.
